What is Unix?

Answer:
Unix is an character based operating system
that was created by AT & T in 1969. It is quite different from graphical operating systems like Windows because it is not designed for the average personal computer. It is usually used in servers and workstations due to it's robust nature and ease of manipulation.

A Unix derivitive, Linux is a free open source family of operating systems. Unix does not have the productivity software that more popular operating systems do. Instead, most applications for Unix are system utilities designed to manipulate the central configuration, or “kernel.” Traditionally, Unix has been used by computer professionals, the government, and academia. The average user would have little use for Unix, but it has facilitated some of the more important technological advances of the past 40 years.
