Macromedia was a multimedia and web software development company Macromedia was known for its Flash player, a plugin for web browsers that allowed videos to be played directly on websites. The company was formed in 1992 by the merger of Macromind-Paracomp and Authorware, Inc.. Macromedia acquired many other companies before being purchased and absorbed outright by its rival Adobe Systems, Inc., in 2005. Macromedia became famous for its small web-based media player known as Flash, which originally was FutureSplash Animator from Macromedia's acquisition of FutureWave Software, with Macromedia renaming the FutureSplash Animator into Flash. Today, Adobe Systems maintains the rights to the Flash player and it is currently the most common web-based player in use today.
