What is a Sub Domain?

Answer:
A sub domain is a domain that is part of another
domain. For example, Tech.QandAs.com is part of the QandAs.com domain name. In this case, QandAs.com is the parent or super domain and "Tech" is the subdomain. Subdomains have two important functions. They can either help to organize a website’s content, or they can shorten a web address.

The ability to organize content via subdomains is used similar to nested folders. Subdomains also keep URL's manageable and more easily distributed.  A URL like http://Tech.QandAs.com is significantly easier to portray or say that http://www.QandAs.com/Technology/index.html.

Another important use of subdomains is for websites that offer free website hosting services. Rarely does a free web hosting account come with a unique domain name. Instead, anyone who wants a free hosting account from 741.com has to have 741 in their domain name. For example, their website might be “website.751.com.” This gives 741.com a little publicity and helps pay for the costs of the hosting.
