|
Answer:
Gene is defined as the basic unit of heredity Gene is the segment of DNA or RNA which in turn consists of numerous nucleotides and each nucleotide is made up of a base group, a sugar, and phosphate groups. Genes are present on the chromosomes. The existence of Gene was first suggested by the Gregor Mendel. Human beings are thought to have about 35000 genes. Genes are responsible for the presence of different types of physical and biological characteristics. Alteration in the structure of the Gene can result in the formation of abnormal Gene which in turn is responsible for many types of Genetic diseases like Down’s syndrome, Turner’s syndrome, etc. However such diseases can be treated with Gene Therapy which in turn involves the technology of Genetic Engineering. Lot of research work has been carried out on Gene Therapy and lot of research is yet to be carried out to fully understand the concept of Genes and Gene Therapy.
