What is a tsunami?

Answer:
A tsunami is a giant wave triggered by landslides or earthquakes.

Tsunamis are caused when large earthquakes or large landslides displace large amounts of water.  This vertical displacement of water sends a wave out in all directions from the source of the disturbance
This wave is only a few feet high in the open ocean and passes by ships relatively unnoticed.  As it approaches shallow waters near shorelines, the waves stack up and slow down, which causes a wall of water to rush ashore.  This wall of water destroys everything in its path.
