A case study is a study that usually comprises of thorough research on activities that affect society.

Case studies are usually part of social sciences
and are an intensive and long-term study on a specific incident, case, or situation.  Case studies usually are done by businesses to measure their impact on the environment, or by financial planners to measure what effect a decision or activity will have on the economy.

Case studies can also be done to measure what effect an individual has on his environment or what effect the environment has on an individual.  In individual situations, case studies are done for each person and then statistics are formed as to what effect the population as a whole has on the environment or other factors.
