What is DNS?

Answer:
Domain Name System, or DNS, is the process and method
of translating or mapping a text website name (for example, www.google.com) to a numeric based internet protocol, or IP, designation.  IP addresses provide a standard way of navigating the internet and finding files on computers and servers throughout the world.

IP addresses are often in the format of a series of numbers separated by periods, like 333.33.333.333.  One can think of these designations as the “real” website address, whereas a text URL is like a storefront or alias address.  Obviously, the real numerical website location and the text website address need to be linked so that people searching for a website by its text designation can find it.  Information that maps this information out is stored in a database.  Many companies, including internet service providers (or ISPs) offer this domain name service and host the information on their domain name server.

DNS can stand for domain name system, domain name service or domain name server.
