Shared hosting requires system administration and is beneficial because many people share the cost of server maintenance. It is beneficial to those who do not want to deal with administering the server but detrimental to power users who want more control.

Shared hosting comes in two types, name-based virtual hosting and shared IP hosting. The disadvantages to name-based virtual hosting are that it does not support secure websites (HTTPS) and name-based hosting shares encryption keys with other hosts. Improperly configured file permissions may give unauthorized persons access to resources on the server.
