What is a Computer Virus?

Answer:
A computer virus is a computer program.
These programs or “virus codes” are written with step-by-step instructions to spread and infect executable files. Once these files have been infected, the virus continues to copy itself and infect other programs – some viruses can wipe out your computer hard drive. One type of virus called a “macro” virus is able to infect word processing and spreadsheet documents.

A virus code has to be executed to begin the malicious infection of computer programs. A computer virus usually runs without the knowledge of a computer user. Without knowing, it is possible for a computer operator to spread the virus by sharing infected files with other computer users.

To prevent viruses from infecting your computer, you need to install an anti-virus program on your computer. The anti-virus program needs to be run on a regular basis. Be sure that whatever anti-virus program you choose is updated appropriately.
