What are PNG files?

Answer:
PNG (pronounced “Ping”) files are
files saved in a relatively new format.  The purpose of PNG, or Portable Network Graphics, files is to go above and beyond the GIF file format as well as to bypass the patent licenses of other formats.  PNG files are similar to GIF files, but provide more depth of color.

Although the PNG format cannot be used for animation, which means it will never replace the GIF format completely, it is quickly gaining acceptance among many graphic artists.  Although “PNG” officially stands for “Portable Network Graphics,” some in the industry refer to it as “PNG Not GIF.”  There is no patent license associated with the PNG format.
