How do I fix my Credit after Identity Theft?

Answer:
It is sad to think that we need to understand such
a dreaded dilemma as Identity Theft, but in today's world it is imperative.  Although crooks and scam artists have stolen dead peoples' names and identities before, our electronic society has made it so much easier for those with such ambitions; to steal our identity right out from under our nose!

There are numerous ways the thieves may get personal information, including discarded postal mail (dumpster diving), credit card scanning devices (skimming), emails or popups requesting personal information (phishing), and more.

Fortunately, federal legislation has developed procedures which are designed to assist with restoration from identity theft, including keeping the bill collectors from harassing you for payment on money you did not spend.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act places responsibility for credit record corrections squarely on the bank or credit card company who provided information to the credit bureau; and the credit bureau itself.

Citi.com website advises the following as primary steps, should you become an unfortunate victim of identity theft:

-Contact the credit bureau and the bank or credit card company by telephone and explain your situation.
-Follow up telephone conversations with registered (return receipt) letters explaining your situation in detail, including specific inaccuracies (i.e., on credit card bill, credit report, etc.).
-Include copies of any supportive papers; receipts, prior statements, reports, etc.
