What is Web Hosting?

Answer:
Web Hosting is basically a service provided
by companies who own server hardware, to allow individuals, institutions or organizations to access web pages via the World Wide Web.

These web pages are built using HTML and can have many levels of functionality usually programmed in a specific language with or without a correlating database.  The HTML web pages are hosted on the Web Hosting companies web servers.  A web server is essentially a computer with access to the Internet.  The Web Hosting companies have giant or significantly larger drains to the Internet which allows them to host large volumes of web pages or applications that need to be accessed over the world wide web.

Web hosting companies sometimes offer free storage space (mostly for small-scale users) on their servers in exchange for ad space on your pages.  They get free advertising; you get free storage and web publicity.

Most web hosting companies charge fees on larger scale storage and publication needs, depending on the type of web hosting needed by their clients, typically other businesses.

There are several variations of web hosting offered by companies, some of which include the free method described above, through shared hosting (where servers are shared by many users), dedicated hosting (user gets server and full control of it), managed hosting (user gets server, but not full control of it), Colocation (user owns and managed their own server in the data center) and several others.

Without web hosting services, the Internet and the World Wide Web simply would not function efficiently as each web page would be need to be hosted on the owners personal computer which we all know can have accessibility and connectivity issues.
