ROM stands for Read Only Memory and is Read Only Memory is used for long-term storage of programs or operating code for computers. The most well-known type of read only memory is an optical disk such as a CD or DVD. ROM storage media are often used when long-term storage of programs or firmware is required. Read Only Memory is slower and requires more power to access than Random Access Memory, but it is also non-volatile, meaning when the power source is removed, the data remains. Read Only Memory comes in many types: Writable and rewritable optical media, also known as Electronically Erasable Read Only Memory, or it can come in the form of semiconductors, also known as Flash Memory. ROM media only has a limited amount of readable and writable cycles, with early ROM media having a limit of 1,000 read/write cycles while newer Flash ROM chips having a read/write limit of 1 million cycles.
