What is a Static IP Address?

Answer:
Every computer that connects to the Internet is assigned
an Internet Protocol, or IP address – a unique numerical address.  This enables computers to communicate with each other, while on the Internet, by sending and receiving information using these IP addresses.  A static IP address is an address that remains the same for a specific computer over a long period of time.  A dynamic IP address, on the other hand, changes at the beginning of each Internet session.

IP addresses are assigned by the computer user's Internet Service Provider, or ISP.  Many ISPs offer dynamic IP addresses, but some users prefer a static IP address.  For example, online gamers prefer static IP addresses so that the server remembers where they were in the game.  In addition, websites need static IP addresses, so that users can find the website each time they connect to the Internet.  Another group of people who prefer static IP addresses are those connecting to a Virtual Private Network (VPN), or who are using remote access.
