A microprocessor is a type of integrated circuit
used as a central processing unit.

Most computer central processing unit chips have one or more microprocessor "cores" (often referred to as multicore processors).  Microprocessors come in 8, 16, 32, and 64 bit, with the number of bits being the size of the registry.

The first microprocessor is often believed to be Intel's 4004 microprocessor, which cost thousands of dollars.  The 4004 originated in 1969.  Microprocessors were used in early high-performance calculators and personal computers.
