What is a Dedicated Server?

Answer:
A dedicated server is a web server in
a computer network that is dedicated to only one customer.  The web server is leased from the web hosting provider or data center.  A dedicated server can more efficiently meet the needs of large applications because the clients can customize both hardware and software as well as enjoying more disk space.

The main difference between a dedicated hosting account and a virtual private server or shared hosting account is you are the only account with access to the particular web server.  You can do whatever you wish (as long as it's within the terms of the hosting provider and the law) and not have to worry about potential damage arising from a shared hosting providers application.

Dedicated servers are more expensive than a VPS or shared hosting account because you usually have more features.  Features specific to your box can be quite limitless.  You can run specific software and customize your hard drives if you wish.

Expect to pay $75/month up to $2,000/month for a dedicated server.  Managed dedicated servers are more expensive than root servers.  One of the more popular managed providers is RackSpace.com and I would recommend SoftLayer.com or 1and1.com for a root server.
