What is Stereo?

Stereo is defined as the device
or a system of recording and reproducing sound
by utilization of two directional microphones and two audio channels simultaneously in such a way as to produce three-dimensional sound effects.


In Stereo two microphones are utilized for sound recording and are connected through two completely independent channels to loudspeakers. The sound which is produced by the Stereo is known as Stereophonic Sound and this term was coined by Western Electric Company.
Stereo is designed with an intention to produce sound effects as in the original acoustic environment. In Stereo the sound appears to come from various directions as in the natural hearing process. The first Stereo transmission was made by Clement Ader in 1881.

The various applications of the Stereo or Stereophonic sound includes FM Broadcasting, Digital Audio Broadcasting, home music systems, film recordings, in televisions and many more. The first commercial movie which utilized this Stereophonic Sound was Walt Disney’s Fantasia in the year 1940.
